    Understanding professional LED terms

    • Light and radiation: Light refers to electromagnetic radiation that can be sensed by the human eye. That is, the segment in the electromagnetic radiation spectrum that human eyes can see. The wavelength of this segment is 360 to 830 nm and is only a very small part of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum.
    • Luminous flux (Φ): The unit is lumen (lm), all the radiation emitted by a light source and detected by the human eye is called luminous flux.
    • Luminous intensity (I): the size of the luminous flux from a light source at a certain angle in a solid angle.
    • The unit is candela (cd) and a light source will emit different strength luminous flux towards different directions. The strength of visible light radiation emitted towards a specific direction is called luminous intensity.
    • Illuminance (E): The unit is the lux (lx). Illuminance is the ratio of luminous flux and the surface hit by the light. The illuminance of lux is calculated as the luminous flux of 1 lumen being evenly distributed on a one square meter area.
    • Luminance (L): The unit is candela per square meter (cd㎡) - the luminance of the light source or the surface hit by the light refers to the density of the luminous intensity on a unit surface from a specific direction. That is, the brightness perceived by the human eye from a light source or a surface hit by light.
    • Luminous efficacy (η): The unit is lumen per watt [lmW]. This represents the efficiency of electrical energy converted to light by a light source.
    • Color temperature: The unit is absolute temperature Kelvin (K). The color temperature of a light source is defined as the absolute temperature of a black body radiator of the same color. The corresponding point for this temperature can be found on the Planckian curve on a color chart.
    • Color rendering: Generally, man-made light should allow human eyes to accurately perceive color as if seeing an object in sunlight. A light source with an average color rendering value Ra of 100 can allow various colors tobe exhibited as if being shined upon by the reference light source. The lower the Ra value, the more distorted the color becomes.
    • Luminaire efficiency: Luminaire efficiency (also called light output ratio) is an important standard used to evaluate light energy efficiency. The value is calculated by dividing the luminous flux produced by a light source with the value of the luminous flux of the light source itself.
    • Power factor (PF): Simply stated this is the energy wasted by the light after passing through the stabilizer. The formula is 18w x 1.2(light effect loss rate) x 1.05 (PF 0.95) = input power.

    10 reasons for using LED

    1. Save electricity. LED can get up to 80% more energy saving than an incandescent bulb, 45% more than power saving light bulb, 50% more power saving than fluorescent light, 70% more than halogen/metal halide light, 75% more than mercury light, and 60% more than high-pressure sodium lamps.
    2. LED service life can reach an average of 24,000hr, incandescent light an average of 3,000hr, power saving light and average of 6,000hr, fluorescent light an average of 8,000hr, halogen/metal halide light an average of 12,000hr, and mercury and high-pressure sodium light an average of 12,000hr.
    3. More environmentally friendly. The production process and materials used for LED lights conforms to ROSH standards. Most importantly, LED does not contain mercury and will not cause a burden on the planet.
    4. Low carbon dioxide emissions. Using Mailao power plant as an example, emissions are 0.92 kg per one unit of electricity. If the LED penetration in a country reaches more than 80%, one to two nuclear power plants can be decommissioned. This can reduce greenhouse effects.
    5. No heat radiation/infrared. Does not damage the object being shined on. LED temperature is so low that people can touch the light source directly. LED does not cause freckles in humans or oxidization, change or shorten the life of products.
    6. Easy to select light color. LED can be easily made into 2500k ~ 6500k color temperatures unlike traditional lights, which are difficult and expensive to make.
    7. Has been nationally certified to produce no electromagnetic interference/blue light hazard. This makes the product safer and more comfortable to use than traditional lights.
    8. Low maintenance costs. LED has a long life and can save on maintenance and labor costs.
    9. High color rendering. LED technology has far surpassed traditional lights and has been widely utilized for food, cloth, and displays.
    10. LED is a semi-conductor. It has a small size and wide utilization. Most importantly, it will not break when dropped on the floor. This prevents users from being cut by broken glass.
